The St Ives Community recognises these needs and aims, through a rapid response, to meet the basic needs of individuals. Its purpose is also to support and initiate projects which help the town's residents As well as giving money, the fund promotes other sources of support which are available in town.
The St Ives Community Fund held its Annual General Meeting in St Ives Library in 2022, The guest speaker was Dave Nathan who was the Social Prescriber at the Stennack Surgery. He gave a very informative talk on his work and how he goes about carrying it out. We are sorry to see him leave the Surgery, but wish him well in his future role as a Social Worker.
At a previous meeting we heard from Chris Wallis
who runs the local foodbank. Those who attended commented that they were very impressed with his work, if also downhearted at the need for the service.
Planted for the benefit of the local wildlife and community. The aim of the project is to create an area with a variety of different fruit trees and shrubs to enhance the biodiversity and to provide wildlife habitats. Also for the community to get involved with looking after the orchard, enjoying the nature, socialising and picking their own fruit.
It is wonderful news that the local Skate Park was completed in 2022, thanks to funding from the new Town Deal, backed up by St Ives Town Council and the donations which the Skate Park fundraising group has raised. St Ives Community Fund has made donations to this in the past. It is now enjoyed by skate boarders from the local area and further afield..
St Ives Community Fund has supported the Coffee & Lunch Club which was launched in Carbis Bay last September (2017). A cheque for £250 was presented to the group to support the work they are doing. The Fund has also financed a Christmas outing for the members of the group in December 2019.
‘The St Ives Community Fund has made significant donations to the local Foodbank, administered by the Rev. Chris Wallis, over the years in recognition of its importance (in 2020, a total of £2,000 and in 2022 a further £1,000). According to Chris Wallis, Foodbank co-ordinator, the sums help to ‘top up’ their finances at a time when it is particularly challenging to provide fresh, perishable foods as well as basics to so many in need.’
It provides food for people in crisis who have been referred by various agencies. All food has been donated and they aim to provide enough food for a family of four for three days with one voucher.
For several years the the fund provided a free three-course dinner on Christmas Day at St Ives Guildhall for anyone who wished to come? Lots of people remember them fondly. Unfortunately it has not been possible to continue these, although they were excellent events.
